French rental association DLR has officially adopted the European Rental Association’s (ERA) carbon reporting guidance as its reference for carbon footprint measurement within the industry.

During a meeting earlier this month, DLR, along with representatives from the Fédération Française du Bâtiment, the Fédération Nationale des Travaux Publics, the Syndicat des Entreprises Internationales des Matériels et Services de Travaux Publics, and companies representing over 50% of the rental market, approved the guide as the preferred standard for harmonized carbon reporting in the sector.

This decision means that DLR member rental companies will now follow the ERA guidance as the standard approach to carbon reporting.

Additionally, construction firms will be encouraged to require its application from rental providers, whether they are DLR members or not.

To promote consistency across the sector, DLR has also committed to making the methodology available to non-member rental companies.

The association stated that it “welcomes the publication” of the guidance, which provides a “clear and practical methodology for calculating greenhouse gas emissions.”

DLR is urging all industry players to adopt the guide to ensure a standardised approach to measuring the sector’s carbon footprint.

A standardised framework for rental companies

Developed in collaboration with KPMG, the guidance is specifically tailored for the equipment rental industry, providing a step-by-step methodology for calculating corporate CO2 emissions across all scopes.

ERA stated that the document is based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and offers a standardized framework for rental companies to establish their carbon footprint.

The guidance covers direct emissions (Scope 1), indirect emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2), and all relevant Scope 3 categories. It also highlights the most significant emission sources in the rental industry and provides tailored calculation formulas, offering flexibility based on data availability.

In collaboration with ERA, DLR has also facilitated an official French translation of the carbon reporting guide.

This initiative will make the Carbon Reporting Guidance report available in French, ensuring that French rental companies can access it more easily and quickly, DLR said.
