Nordic-based rental company Ramirent has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hitachi Energy and green hydrogen provider P2X Solutions to collaborate on promoting zero-emission power solutions.

As part of the partnership, the companies are aiming to develop and scale alternatives to diesel-powered equipment and explore new business models to facilitate the adoption of hydrogen power in rental fleets.

Ramirent, which is part of Loxam, also plans to incorporate hydrogen-powered generators into its RamiGreen product range, which already includes both low and zero-emission rental equipment.

This agreement builds on a partnership that began last year, when Ramirent deployed Hitachi Energy’s HyFlex hydrogen generator in Finland to produce electricity from hydrogen at a site in Helsinki.

According to Hitachi, a 1MVA HyFlex generator can offset up to 1,600 tonnes of diesel fuel annually, which translates to a reduction of 5,800 tonnes of CO2 compared to traditional diesel power generators operating continuously.

P2X Solutions, which launched its first commercial green hydrogen operation at its production plant in Harjavalta in February, supplied the fuel for the generators.

Matti Vaattovaara, managing director of Hitachi Energy Finland, commented, “The green energy transition needs its makers. By joining forces, we are accelerating this necessary development to mitigate climate change.

“We believe in partnerships and now the best players in the industry combine their expertise to serve the most important common goal of our time – reducing carbon emissions and building a carbon-neutral energy future. HyFlex is an excellent example of modern technology that meets the need for clean electrification.”

Mikael Kämpe, managing director of Ramirent Finland, added, “There is a growing need for environmentally friendly power generation solutions in our customer base. Our goal is to establish a range of zero-emission power generation equipment such as the HyFlex hydrogen generator as part of our wide range of zero- and low-emission ” RamiGreen “products to meet market demand.”

Herkko Plit, managing director of P2X Solutions, stated, “The hydrogen economy needs new openings and we are delighted with the cooperation agreement with Hitachi Energy and Ramirent. As a result, we commit to supporting emission-free construction operations by supplying clean hydrogen either through rental companies or directly to construction companies.”
