Wacker Neuson trench roller to meet “critical goals” of rental customers
04 February 2025
Wacker Neuson has launched the articulated RTD-SC4 trench roller and said that it will meet the “critical goals” of rental and contractor customers.
Powered by a 19.8hp (17.7kW) Kohler KDW1003 series diesel engine, the unit is a redesigned version of the company’s first trench roller, launched 30 years ago.
The company said that the RTD-SC4 is built for durability, ease of service, and low maintenance, with a focus on operator experience, productivity, and safety.
Speaking to IRN at the ARA Show in Las Vegas, Roberto Martinez, director of product management & market development at Wacker Neuson America, noted that while the company’s trench rollers have remained largely unchanged over the years, the RTD-SC4 introduces several upgrades based on rental dealer and operator feedback.
Enhancements include an adjustable drum width from 23.6 to 32 inches, allowing flexibility for different trench applications.
The design has also been simplified, reducing the number of parts, hoses, and connections by more than 30%. A revised hose routing system improves serviceability, lowers downtime, and reduces total cost of ownership.
The new model features a 1,000-hour service interval on the transmission and exciter system.
Additionally, a return-to-center function automatically realigns the machine’s articulation when the steering paddle is released, reducing the need for constant steering adjustments and improving efficiency.
A patent-pending self-cleaning drum has also been introduced to help remove dirt buildup in wet conditions.
Technology upgrades
A newly designed remote control allows operators to manage all machine functions without needing to enter the trench. The remote eliminates the need for keys, a throttle, or displays on the machine itself.
The system features two-way communication between the remote transmitter and an onboard transceiver, providing real-time operational data through an LED display.
Key safety features include a pre-tip alarm and an automatic tip-over shut-off with lockout functionality to prevent engine damage in case of a rollover.
The RTD-SC4’s proportional hydraulic components enable smoother acceleration and controlled drum movement, reducing abrupt shifts when loading onto hard surfaces such as steel or concrete.
Optimised radio technology ensures reliable communication, allowing the signal to navigate small obstacles while ensuring the machine stops if it moves beyond a safe range. Each RTD-SC4 is uniquely paired with its own remote to prevent interference when multiple units operate on the same jobsite.
Gert Reichetseder, Wacker Neuson president & CEO, Americas, said, “This next generation trench roller is a real game changer. It delivers both the industry-proven compaction performance you expect from Wacker Neuson and an exceptional operator experience.
“The beauty of this machine is that it combines both technological sophistication, for enhanced control, as well as mechanical simplicity, for durability, easy maintenance and reduced total cost of ownership. So, both operators and rental dealers win.”
Elsewhere on its stand, the company also showcased its new WL250 wheel loader, the first in a new series from the company.
The 4.6 tonne machine is powered by a 19kW Perkins engine and is the smallest category in North America from the company.
It features a larger cab for increased operator comfort as well as a bucket volume or 0.25 meters and clearance heights under 6.5 ft. (78.74 in.)
The company will launch the machine in Q2 2025.
