Telehandler, scissor and boom lift debuts from Genie
23 January 2025
Genie is making a range of debuts at the ARA Show in Las Vegas next week, including an expansion of its telehandler range and new hybrid and electric booms, alongside its recently announced slab scissor line upgrade
The new S-85 XC FE hybrid and S-85 XC E electric boom lifts feature Lithium-Ion technology and other improvements. See full details about the booms here.
Genie has also expanded its family of telescopic handlers with the addition of two shorter boom, high-capacity models, with one less section than other models in the GTH range.
Eliminating the weight of the single boom section allows for other design changes that reduce maintenance costs. A single master and lift cylinder extends and retracts the boom, compared with two cylinders found on competing models, says Genie. In addition, hydraulic hoses are routed away from sharp edges. The flexible hoses are encased in a protective wrap to prevent wear.
Both models come standard with a 74 hp DEF-free engine that eliminates service costs associated with DEF filters or regeneration. A redesigned gauge cluster comes with an IP67 seal and thicker housing, preventing exposure to dust and moisture, reducing maintenance and repair, while standard foam-filled Enduro A/T tyres with improved tread reduce replacement costs.
With 80% commonality of parts through the full telehandler portfolio, the plan has also been to reduces parts inventory and simplify maintenance.
Designed for productivity
Both the pick-and-carry GTH-1244 and GTH-1044 have high capacities for quickly moving loads lower to the ground because the absence of stabilizers.
The 74 hp engine delivers a high power-to-weight ratio, ensuring fast drive speeds, and the drivetrain has front and rear limited slip differentials as standard. Genie’s limited slip differentials increase machine power and speed by utilizing engine power more efficiently, and reduce stress on tires and axle shafts.
Operators have 360-degree visibility of all four tyres, while a single, multi-functional joystick results in half as many hand movements required to position loads. In addition, operators can make load adjustments at full height without locking the rear axle.
A heavy-duty lifting shackle comes as standard. In addition, a variety of optional accessories rotating and swing fork carriages, side shift and fork positioner carriages, and truss and bucket can be used across many of the other models in Genie’s GTH product line.
Scissor expansion
The new telehandlers and booms will complement Genie’s previously launched, newly-designed core slab scissor lift product line encompassing six models. The most noticeable change in the next-generation scissors is the curved linkage design. This departure from industry standard reduces machine weight, allowing Genie to use right-sized components, including batteries, drive motors and other electrical components, which have a lower replacement part cost.
The company said it benchmarked its new lifts against competitors’ machines, and its own E-Drive scissors, to ensure industry-leading performance.
Extensive research and design was carried out on the full range of the GS-1932, GS-2632, GS-3232, GS-2646, GS-3246 and GS-4046 models, to identify opportunities to eliminate rust, limit damage and reduce wear and tear.
- For example, it is common for water to pool at the top of the machine chassis, resulting in rust. Genie designed its new chassis to mitigate stagnant water in these areas.
- Extension decks can be damaged or bent during use; Genie’s new scissors incorporate reinforced steel in targeted locations to reduce damage.
- During loading and unloading, operators occasionally mis-fork the side pockets, causing damage to the chassis and swing out trays. The company added steel around the side pockets to reduce the chance of damage to the chassis.
“Genie’s Next-Generation Scissor Lifts are redefining the standard for slab scissor lifts and moving this classic MEWP category into the future,” said Christian Dube, Senior Global Product Manager. “Our priority when redesigning these lifts was to drive lower cost of ownership, improve serviceability, and enhance the user experience.”
Overall, there are fewer serviceable components than with previous generations of scissors. Of the components that remain, at least 70% have commonality across the product line, said the company. A consistent parts layout in easy-to-access locations has also been introduced.
Another update sees just two battery part numbers across the entire slab scissor line. Furthermore, in response to customer feedback and regional preferences, the units are available with commonly used high-quality FLA batteries as standard for customers in North America, and standard maintenance-free AGM batteries for customers in other regions around the world.
Lithium-ion will be available as an option globally. Finally, Genie developed Battery Guard as an option to help protect owners’ investment recognizing that battery theft is a common problem.
Re-imagined experience
There is also a re-designed platform. On the GS-1932, standard fixed guard rails allow users to drive through most common doors without the need to pause and fold guardrails down. The platform is 20% larger, offering more room for two people to work comfortably indoors.
Genie says it has also solved the “flex” that occurs on an extension deck by reinforcing the deck, giving it more structure.
The new Smart Link platform controller is completely redesigned to be 30% lighter than the previous version and incorporates a more ergonomic design. Additionally, because it is modular, parts of the controller can be replaced without requiring replacement of the whole. The control system also has been updated to align to a new ISO standard (ISO 21455:2020).
Lastly, in keeping with regional preferences, Genie’s Lift Tools Spill Guard hydraulic oil containment system will be standard on next-generation scissors offered in North America. Spill Guard is an option for the rest of the world.
