AFC Energy, the UK-based manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cell technologies, has announced the appointment of John Wilson as its new CEO.

Wilson, who is the current CEO of connectivity solutions developer Bulgin, will replace the outgoing CEO Adam Bond in January 2025.

Prior to joining Bulgin, he was CEO of Elektron Technology for almost a decade.

His early career was spent in engineering and technology consulting roles, where he specialised in bringing emerging technologies to market in both the UK and North America.

According to AFC, his appointment comes at a “pivotal time” in which it is targeting its “next chapter of growth.”

The company said he will focus on scaling its manufacturing capabilities and developing the value in its ammonia cracker technology.

Wilson said, “I am honoured to be joining AFC Energy at such an exciting time in the company’s evolution. The opportunity to lead a company that is at the forefront of clean energy innovation is truly compelling.

“I look forward to working with the talented team at AFC Energy to build on the strong foundation laid by Adam Bond and to drive the company’s growth as we commercialise our technologies and expand our global footprint.”

Chairman Gary Bullard will hold the role of CEO until Wilson joins the company. He added, “We are delighted to welcome John Wilson as our new CEO. His extensive experience in leading technology companies through growth and transformation phases makes him the ideal candidate to take AFC Energy forward.

“We have every confidence that under his leadership, AFC Energy will continue to make significant strides in the clean energy sector, particularly as we advance our manufacturing and ammonia cracker initiatives.”

The appointment of Wilson comes just months after the company raised £15.8 million in two share issues. The company said the shares will be used to invest in its rental joint venture with Speedy Hire.

In 2023 the companies aunched Speedy Hydrogen Solutions Ltd (SHS), a 50:50 joint venture company dedicated to renting hydrogen fuel cell powered generators.
