Design work has started on a new, US$ 7 billion metro and light railway system for Abu Dhabi, UAE. Covering a total of around 60 km in phase 1 and a further 60 to 70 km in subsequent phases, the system could be operational by 2017.

In the first phase of the project, up to 20 km of metro lines and around 40 km of light rail lines will be designed and built.

Most of metro network is expected to be underground while the light rail system will link Central Station, Adnec, North Island, Al Wahda and Zayed Sports City.

It is expected that the metro system will link the Central Business District, Saadiyat Island, Sowwah Island, Reem Island, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi International Airport, Capital City District, Emerald Gateway, Adnec and Zayed Sports City.

The project is also hoped to link to other rail transport systems across the UAE.
