Friday Roundup: EU MEWP tariffs | world’s tallest scissor | new acquisitions

The past week in equipment rental news included some (literal) highs and lows, continuing consolidation among rental companies, and the construction of a new factory for a major OEM.

Perhaps the most attention-grabbing headline was the announcement that the European Union (EU) has provided a summary of proposed tariffs on MEWPs produced in China, following its anti-dumping investigation. They have been met with varying reactions from the industry, ranging from concern to relief. 

The investigation was carried out by the European Commission (EC), and has resulted in the provisional set of tariffs centered on protecting EU countries from ‘dumped’ imports of “Mobile Access Equipment (MAE), originating in the People’s Republic of China.”

Also related to mobile access equipment, UK access rental specialist Hire Safe Solutions has partnered with Dingli to unveil the world’s tallest scissor lift - the Dingli 3730HRT.

Boasting an unprecedented working height of 37m, the machine was developed between the manufacturer and Hire Safe Solution’s CEO Gerard Jennings.

The custom-built lift is set to revolutionize the way high-altitude work is approached, Jennings said.

Hire Safe Solutions and Dingli co-created the Dingli 3730HRT.

On the mergers and acquisitions front, Australian rental company Kennards Hire has brought Victoria-based businesses East Gippsland Hire (EGH) and Riviera Hire into its fold. 

Kennards said that following the deals, which expands its footprint in the state to 39, both companies will work from one branch in Bairnsdale.

Meanwhile, Sweden-based Adapteo Group is to acquire the rental business of Danish modular building company JYTAS. It said the deal is a “significant step” in its goal to expand in its presence, capabilities, and premium offering within the Danish market.

Based in Gallen, JYTAS specializes in modular buildings for offices, schools, and healthcare applications. 

In OEM happenings, Bobcat broke ground for its new $300-million manufacturing facility in Mexico. Located outside of Monterrey, the new 700,000-sq.-ft. facility will expand Bobcat’s existing global footprint to create additional production capacity and manufacturing capabilities for select compact track and skid-steer loader models.
