Speedy invests €9.6 million in electric vans

UK rental company Speedy has invested £8.25 million (€9.6 million) in 150 electric vans, as part of efforts to convert more than half of its 1,100-unit-strong commercial fleet to electric or hybrid units by 2025.

The company, which is aiming to become Net Zero recently placed an order with Ford for 100 of its 4.2-tonne single chassis cab Ford E-Transit models, and 50 of the 3.5-tonne E-Transit vans.

According to Speedy, the new vehicles will replace an equivalent number of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles currently being used the company, thereby cutting its CO2e emissions by around 1,280 tonnes a year.

Chris Dempsey, Managing Director of Operational Support at Speedy, said, “Transforming our fleet with low and zero carbon models is crucial to leading the hire industry’s journey towards decarbonisation and aligns with our strategy of de-carbonising our property network and expanding our low-emission ECO tools and equipment range.

“Our strategy supports our customer’s sustainability objectives as they strive to deliver projects with minimal environmental impact, of which site deliveries play a vital role. This significant investment in new electric vehicles demonstrates our commitment in helping our customers achieve these aims.”

The addition of the E-Transit models follows Speedy’s decision to overhaul its company car list, with 100% of the models made available to employees now of the ultra-low emission type.

Together, the two actions are said to represent a “major step” in Speedy’s plans to become a net-zero business and to operate a fully low-carbon fleet by 2030.

Adam Harkin, Ford of Britain & Ireland head of national fleet accounts, said, “Ford has been Speedy’s preferred vehicle supplier over many years, and we are delighted to continue that partnership as the company accelerates its move to a zero-carbon future and transitions to electric alternatives for its fleet.

“As Speedy invests in electric vehicles, Ford looks forward to working together to find further opportunities to maximise the productivity and sustainability of its delivery fleet through our integrated Ford Pro solutions.”

While a Ford E-Transit trial vehicle will become operational next month, Speedy’s new electric vans are expected to join its network in October.
