United Rentals highlights digital tools for contractors

United Rentals, the world’s largest equipment rental company, has published a white paper looking at digital tools to improve safety, sustainability and productivity on construction sites.

Solutions in the white paper include digitally-enabled site access control systems, with modular gates and turnstiles, with a card reader, allowing workers to swipe or tap an ID badge equipped with a radio frequency identification tag (RFID).

The data can then be used to create a readily accessible real time log of everyone on the site which can be used to facilitate a faster, more effective response in the event of an emergency.

United Rentals added that the same badge used at entry points could be used to allow access to equipment, based on user profile data, which could include operator training and certification.

It said its cloud-based fleet management software was also working to improve productivity by using telematics data to implement an effective preventative maintenance programme. The data can also be used to generate utilisation reports on each piece of equipment in the fleet.

And, the company said, it had digital tools to enable emissions tracking and remote environmental monitoring. Its battery energy storage systems were among the technologies available to save on fuel costs.

“At United Rentals, our aspiration is to connect the worksite.” said Tony Leopold, senior vice president, chief technology & strategy officer, United Rentals. “By jointly innovating with our customers, we are developing new ways to improve worksite safety, productivity, and sustainability.”
