United Rentals invests in solar generator fleet

United Rentals has added a number of EHR Solar Battery Generators from Hipower to its North American fleet.
The mobile micro grid solution pairs a battery energy storage system with power provided by integrated photovoltaic solar panels and a propane generator.
United, which developed the generator alongside Hipower, said the units deliver “reliable power while lowering noise levels and emissions on jobsites” and means customers can boost project sustainability.
In solar mode, the generator features a 5.0kW peak solar array with extendable panels, which converts the energy into electric and stores it within built-in batteries.
A 45kVA generator that is powered by propane is also included, and provides a cleaner fuel source than traditional diesel, United said.
At the same time, the hybrid option minimises generator run time by storing energy in the battery system and running on battery power whenever possible.
A smart grid controller turns on the generator when battery is low due to reduced sunlight or increased demand. Once the battery is sufficiently charged (via sun light or generator) the controller turns the generator off.
For transport to and from job sites, the EHR Solar Battery Generator can be mounted on a 20-by-8-ft trailer or a skid, while it also comes with a charging station for equipment or electric tools and trucks.
Meanwhile, It can also power temporary office spaces such as container offices, mobile office trailers and guard shacks and can potentially serve as the single source of power, depending on load requirements.
Larry Worthington, vice president, PHVAC region, United Rentals, said, “The EHR Solar Battery Generator is a game-changer for companies that want to go to the next level of sustainability with higher energy efficiency to reduce jobsite emissions and fuel use.
“The system can reduce emissions and noise levels to zero, making it an ideal fit for various applications, including urban, noise-sensitive environments.”
Rafael Acosta, president, Hipower, added, “As part of its commitment to providing a more electric equipment rental fleet, United Rentals is leading the way in offering on-site, sustainable charging stations to ensure customers can easily and efficiently recharge electric equipment.
“They were an instrumental partner in helping us develop the EHR Solar Battery Generator, a cutting-edge microgrid system that has the potential to revolutionise power generation and energy management.”
Hipower is a sister company to Himoinsa within the Yanmar group.
