Metso’s hybrid Lokotracks are ‘Planet Positive’

Finnish manufacturer introduces new diesel-electric range of crushing and screening equipment

Metso’s new e-Power range of hybrid Lokotrack crushers and screeners

Finnish manufacturer Metso Outotec has unveiled the e-Power range of hybrid Lokotrack crushers and screeners.

The diesel-electric range comprises 15 new crushers and six screens, representing the broadest portfolio of this type of hybrid mobile equipment.

Metso says the new range demonstrates its commitment to helping limit global warming to 1.5 degrees C, in line with the climate change goals set out in the Paris Agreement, and with the company’s own Planet Positive strategies.

Metso says the reduction in fuel consumption promised by the latest Lokotrack crushing and screening equipment is resulting in a saving in CO2 emssion levels of around 20,000 tonnes per annum, compared with 2010 levels.

According to the company, the hydraulic oil and lubricant volumes of the new machines have been reduced by more than 50%, to further ease their environmental impact.

Metso says, based on its current data, a Lokotrack unit uses as much as 80% less oils compared to previous models. The hybrid driveline also further reduces the need for oils and lubricants.

Kimmo Anttila, VP of Lokotrack solutions at Metso Outotec, said, “We introduced the first Lokotrack E-models already 35 years ago, so we are one of the pioneers in this field. During the past couple of years the demand for hybrid solutions has really taken off as environmental regulations have become increasingly stringent in more countries. In fact, sales of the Lokotrack E-models have doubled in five years, and we expect the trend to accelerate.”

He said, “Lokotrack design principles are simple: optimise the operating costs, capacity, and end-product quality of the customer application. We give consideration to the total fuel consumption, including the engine and driveline technologies, but also to other factors, such as the unit transportation weight and the engine stand-by function.

Anttila added, “A diesel and hybrid offering complete each other; in remote locations where power grid is not available, a diesel driveline is still the only viable solution. We are investing heavily in development of sustainable technologies. Lokotrack is robust, energy efficient, and highly mobile – and it meets the versatile needs of customers today and tomorrow.”
